EXHIBITION STATEMENT
At the farthest latitudes upon the globe there exist landscapes of sheer ice, perhaps the final
stretches of ‘pure wilderness’ on the planet. This vast isolated terrain has come under great
scrutiny due to the concern that it is a dwindling resource and that as it dwindles it is fundamentally
altering the delicate ecological balance established over millennia.
Glacial is an exhibition predicated upon the notion that these areas of absolute ice no longer
live solely in humankind’s imagination, in fact we are beginning to understand the inordinate
influence we have upon them.
In this exhibition I equate polar ice to Popsicles transforming this delicious treat into a potent trope for human desire and consumption. Simultaneously, large and fragile ceramic penguins are set adrift as their ecology cleaves and erodes. This is done with the desire to identify how what we enjoy and deem comfortable' may not always be in our own best interest.
Together these pieces are intended to challenge the viewer to negotiate the complexities of societal expectations in order to draw attention to the glacial rate at which attitudes and values change.
